The bluesign® standard guarantees the highest possible freedom from toxic substances and the most economical use of resources through the entire textile chain. The four cornerstones are consumer protection, air emissions, water emissions and conditions at the workplace. Those who meet the standards can use the bluesign® label on their advertising.

bluesign® - Setting new standards for a successful textile industry

The declared objective of the independent bluesign® standard is to put a reliable and proactive tool at the disposal of the entire textile production chain – from raw material and component suppliers who manufacture e.g. yarns, dyes and additives, to textile manufacturers, to retailer and brand companies, to consumers.

Increasing prices of raw material, due to scarce availability of resources, and active environmental protection are the challenges faced by a future-driven textile industry. Being successful in the market place requires taking responsibility when it comes to environmental and consumer protection and prioritizing the ecological footprint as a prerequisite in corporate strategies. The bluesign standard optimizes the entire textile production process sustainably and reduces harm to the environment and to human health to a minimum. Decreasing production cost, increasing competitiveness and long-lasting innovation speak also for commercial success.

For consumers - The bluesign® product label

End-consumers grow more aware of sustainability issues. They want to get involved in making the world a better place, at the same time they do not want to miss out on innovation and functionality. Purchasing clothing or a backpack labeled with a bluesign certificate guarantees the possession of a retail product that involves the lowest level of harmful substances, poses no danger to health and was produced in an environmentally sound manner. Thus, the end-consumer’s natural wish to receive a product that is safe, environmentally friendly and sustainable can nowadays be nearly fully satisfied. The label “bluesign product” represents the respective seal of approval. In addition, it provides assurance and certainty that the end-consumer take action against global warming and the destruction of the environment.

For industries - The bluesign® standard

The bluesign® standard brings together the entire textile manufacturing chain to jointly reduce the ecological footprint of a responsibly acting textile industry. Instead of focusing on finished product testing, the bluesign® standard analyzes all input streams – from raw materials to chemical component, to resources – with a sophisticated “Input Stream Management” process. Prior to production, components are assessed based on their ecotoxicological impact. Potentially harmful substances can hence be eliminated before production even begins.

A key aspect of the bluesign® standard is never to compromise on product functionality, quality or design. Consequently, it is in some instances, for the reason of performance requirements, inevitable to use specific intelligent chemistry. In those cases it is fundamental to properly manage the manufacturing process using “Best Available Technology”.

The bluesign® standard is designed to provide solutions to pressing Environment, Health and Safety issues along the entire textile manufacturing chain. Instead of restricting the use of certain substances, it provides the manufacturer with components, processes and know-how, that can be used and enable the manufacturer to produce quality products with the highest consumer and environmental safety.
