1% for the Planet

In 2001, Craig Mathews of Blue Ribbon Flies and Yvon Chouinard of Patagonia, founded an organization called 1% for the Planet, an association of companies committed to donate at least 1% of sales in favor of concrete actions to protect and restore the natural environment. 1% for the Planet is an association devoted solely to enhance the effectiveness of local environmental organizations by giving them more funds. The intention is to help fund these diverse environmental organizations so that they, together, can be a more powerful force in solving various Earth preservation's problems.

Each company that decides to become a member of 1% for the Planet contributes 1% of its annual sales as tax-deductible donations to non-profit environmental organizations. The members of 1% for the Planet can choose from a list of thousands of groups approved by and registered with 1% for the Planet. Each member donates directly its our contributions, which simplifies the decision-making process, minimizes bureaucracy, and encourages member companies to establish direct relationships with the groups they support.

In return, the companies use the 1% for the Planet logo to communicate their environmental commitment to customers. The logo allows customers to easily distinguish between mere commercial green marketing and real commitment.
